You have planned all year for your cruise vacation, watching the calendar and checking off each day until the time has finally arrived. Naturally you want to look your best while on the ship, so you’ve taken all of the clothes out of your closet and drawers in an effort to pick the best ones to take. Once you’ve finally narrowed it down to the ones that make you look the most attractive, you sadly discover that they will all not fit in your suitcase. You put some back and get the cases to close, and then remember that you will also need other things such as toiletries and accessories such as shoes. This poses another problem and you can’t figure out how you are possibly going to manage to bring everything you feel you need. There is a systematic approach to packing for your cruise that will cut down on the stress of determining what to bring.

The first thing that you want to do is to assemble all of the paper work that you will need to bring with you. This includes your identification, such as your passport and your driver’s license. Of course you will need your cruise tickets and if you will be flying to the ship’s port of departure, you will need your airline tickets as well. Don’t forget to bring your traveler’s checks or credit cards, extra cash and proof of vaccines if that is required.

Once you have packed your important documents and money resources, it’s time to move on to electronic items that you will need to carry with you. You will already know to bring your cell phone, but don’t forget to pack the charger. If you are bringing a camera, add that in as well as extra film or batteries it may need. An important thing to have on a cruse is a pair of binoculars, so make sure you pack them as well.

If you plan to spend time on the deck reading, pack your novels or magazines that you plan to enjoy. Don’t forget the brochures that detail all of the options the cruise offers and any maps that you may need to visit tourist locations on the ships different ports of call.

If you take specific medications, it’s time to pack them. You may want to bring non prescription items such as aspirin or stomachache relievers. Include a small first aid kit and don’t forget your contact lenses cleaner, hair and skin care products and sun screen.

Finally, you need to pack your clothes. Be sure to include a bathing suit, casual clothes and at least one formal outfit. Pack comfortable sandals as well as walking shoes and you will be able to enjoy your cruise knowing that you have brought everything that you need.

Finding the right travel luggage before you depart on your trip will greatly depend on where and how you will be traveling. If your journey is a weekend getaway to Paris, and you will have all the amenities provided, then you may need little in the way of travel luggage; the same applies if you are a backpacker who will be constantly on the move. Your bags must be easy to pack, transport and carry. However, if you are heading to Southeast Asia and are planning to put your roots down in Bangkok for a long time, then you can buy the biggest suitcase allowed, along with some added trunks and boxes.

There are a couple of important considerations when choosing travel luggage. First, one of the greatest mistakes that people make when buying travel luggage, is worrying more about weight than size. Weight is less of a problem than bulk, though it is important to be conscious of both. If you can travel light, all the better, but if you cannot, then try to travel small. Secondly, bring what is the most important to you. Some people have the incredible ability to travel with merely a tent, a toothbrush, a change of clothes and a guidebook. I am not one of them, but have found that if you can bring a balance of basic necessities and things for enriching your experience (such as a camera or journal), this can help you pack more quickly.

Your choice of travel luggage is of paramount importance, and will most likely involve you making a purchase at one point or another. After a certain point in your life, it will no longer suffice to borrow your brother’s ripped backpack from fifteen years back or your father’s first roll travel suitcase. You will have to hazard a purchase on your own.

Backpacks can be an obvious choice for people who will be hiking over hills and doing a fair amount of camping. It is the kind of travel luggage that distributes weight evenly on your shoulders and hips and takes the main weight off your lower back. However, if you are considering using public transport and walking in busy, crowded areas, it may be wiser to buy a combination bag and backpack. Both pieces come apart and zip together depending on where you are going, and can be very helpful if you do not wish to look too conspicuous with your backpack.

If you are going on a tour, and will be with a group who has their travel luggage carried for them, it may be wise to look into purchasing a duffel bag. These are easily stored in compartments where suitcases do not fit, and can be easily hoisted on to a pack animal or stowed away on a boat.

Traveling by air may merely require that you purchase a conventional suitcase, and if you are a frequent traveler, it may be wise to get a good quality one. The typical way that travel luggage is handled in airports could easily seeing you replacing that cheap suitcase after each trip.

However and wherever you go, remember to consider the importance of what you will be carrying, and how the travel luggage that you eventually choose can either make or break a trip.

How many times have you returned from a trip only to discover that at least some of the clothes you packed in your suitcase were left folded without ever seeing the light of the day? Well, I do not about your traveling packing skills, but I had to work on mine before being able to state that I am now officially a “light” traveler!

I still remember the first time I began packing for a trip overseas and laying out all those stuff I originally thought of carrying to the other side of the Atlantic. My bed was full and the carpet around it seemed pretty packed as well. I panicked when I dragged my “perfect-sized” suitcase inside the room only to discover that it could barely fit one third of the things I have placed on or near the bed. I recall laughing at the sight of the suitcase in comparison with the heavy load scattered around my bedroom. There was no way anything would fit in there! I placed the suitcase at an empty corner and before aborting this impossible mission, I tried to check off my list what seemed as unnecessary or over the top. For example, regardless of the cold weather, nobody needs three pair of gloves. The four pair of jeans became two, and so forth. By the time I had successfully stacked almost half of my previous previously exposed wardrobe back into my closet space, I felt hungry, confused, and that more than three hours have passed; even though this process took me not more than one. But then I discovered with pleasure that I was able to fit my belongings to my black medium-sized carry-on luggage and I felt proud of my accomplishment.

Since then, I have packed, unpacked, and repacked my possessions tiny or big, heavy or light, useful or slightly not, more than 100 times. I am not considering myself to be an expert, but I have certainly advanced my ability to see, before it is too late, if the stuff I want to carry can actually be carried and safely reach their destination point. My advice to all of you that have gone through a similar experience or are planning to board a ship, enter an airplane, or ride a train, is to travel light. Not only you will save precious space in your luggage for the things you will want to buy during your vacations, but most importantly you are able to carry your belongings without feeling that you could have done a better job. Although when I unpack I still discover something I did not wear or use while being away, I am certainly a better backpacker and I managed to survive during all those endless hours that I had to wait to get on board, without hurting my back, arm or neck. Good luck with your packing business and remember to have fun during your much desired recreational trip.

With the rising costs of airfares and the increasing time it takes to get through security at the airports; more and more families are deciding to travel by car for their vacation. Most of us with young children are returning to the days we grew up in where we traveled most places by car with our parents.

We started asking other friends for how they make the trip go easier and how they beat the “Are we there yets?”, here’s ten tips to help your car vacation go a lot easier:

1. Decide do your kids do better in the early morning or evening hours for traveling? Which ever it is plan your travel to match, for this us our kids don’t travel well in the morning they do much better if we leave after 2:00pm and travel into the evening.

2. Stock your car with favorite pre-bagged snacks for everyone, even parents, a cooler with lots of water and favorite drinks, colored pencils, crayons, a few coloring books, sticker books, travel games, and a travel journal for older kids.

3. Take along Gameboys & games, personal CD/cassette players (even for little kids), and you can get books on tape from the library.

4. Do consider a portable DVD player, this makes 5 or 6 hour a day seem like 2 hours. It also cuts a lot of the unnecessary stops as the kids are involved in the movie playing.

5. To avoid the difficulty of hauling in a suitcase for every person into a hotel for the 1 night stops. Pack a 3 day bag into which each person contributes 3 days worth of clothes. This way you take one suitcase of clothes in every three days.

6. Do pack a lightweight table cloth for outdoor lunch stops along the way.

7. Be sure to take the digital camera you’ll create lifetime memories.

8. Do get postcards from every major destination along the way.

9. All kids are different but in general don’t drive as far as the adults can go in one day, try to keep car travel to a 6 to 8 hour range of time.

10. Don’t fill the inside of the car to the brim causing less space for the kids, instead consider a car topper for safe keeping of your belongings.

Have a great family vacation.
